Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions South African SME owners ask about business consulting, pricing, process, outcomes and working with ABCD.
About ABCD
What does ABCD do?
ABCD is a South African business consultancy that helps SMEs improve profitability, build business controls, optimise processes, and strengthen leadership. We focus on business performance improvement that delivers measurable results, not theory. Our services span profitability, controls, process optimisation, KPIs, operational excellence, growth strategy and leadership alignment.
What does ABCD stand for?
ABCD stands for the Academy for Business Control Development. We are a division of International Nautical Services (Pty) Ltd, founded in 2024 and based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Is ABCD a registered company?
Yes. ABCD is a division of International Nautical Services (Pty) Ltd, registration number 2024/629591/07, based in Cape Town, South Africa.
What makes ABCD different from other consultants?
We focus on measurable results, not theory or thick documents. We diagnose the real constraints in your business, build a practical and funded plan, and transfer the capability to your team so improvements last beyond the engagement. We listen first, we work alongside your people, and we hand over the dashboards and habits rather than keeping you dependent on us.
Why should I choose ABCD?
Because we deliver business performance improvement you can measure. We help you improve margins, strengthen cash flow, reduce operational risk, and build a business that can grow beyond the founder. Every engagement starts with a free discovery call and ends with the capability in your team, not with us.
Services & Expertise
What services does ABCD offer?
Seven core services: profitability improvement, business controls, process optimisation, KPI management, operational excellence, business growth strategy, and leadership alignment. Each can be engaged individually or combined into a broader performance improvement programme.
What business problems does ABCD solve?
We solve the problems that keep SME owners awake: revenue growing but profit not, unpredictable cash flow, weak controls and recurring losses, processes that live in people's heads, no KPIs or dashboards, growth that strains cash and quality, and a business that cannot grow beyond the founder.
Do you offer business turnaround services?
Yes. Our profitability, controls and cash flow services are directly applicable to businesses that need to turn performance around. We diagnose the causes, stabilise cash, and build a prioritised plan to return the business to profit.
Can you help with business growth?
Yes. Our business growth strategy service helps you choose the right markets, fund and sequence the investment, and keep controls and cash flow ahead of the curve so growth strengthens the business rather than making it more fragile.
Do you help with operational improvement?
Yes. Process optimisation and operational excellence are core services. We map how work flows, remove rework and bottlenecks, build standard work, and create a continuous-improvement habit your team owns.
Can you help us build KPIs and dashboards?
Yes. Our KPI management service helps you choose the small set of leading and lagging indicators that matter, define them clearly with owners and targets, and build a simple dashboard and reporting rhythm your team actually uses.
Industries & Clients
What industries does ABCD serve?
We work across manufacturing, distribution and wholesale, retail and e-commerce, professional and business services, construction and trades, logistics and transport, healthcare and wellness, hospitality and tourism, financial services, technology and software, education and training, and agriculture and agri-processing.
What size businesses do you work with?
Typically SMEs with 1–200 employees and R5m–R200m annual revenue. We work with established businesses that have outgrown founder-led decision-making, and with younger businesses that need a clear, fundable growth plan.
Do you only work with South African businesses?
Our primary focus is South African SMEs. We are Cape Town-based and serve businesses across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and the rest of South Africa, remotely and on-site where needed.
Do you work with start-ups?
We work with younger businesses that need a clear, fundable growth plan, but our core focus is established SMEs that have outgrown founder-led decision-making and are ready to build the systems and leadership to scale.
Which businesses benefit most from ABCD?
SME owners who are ready to move from working in the business to working on it — those who recognise that profit, controls, processes and leadership need to be built deliberately, not left to chance, and who want the capability to stay in their team.
Pricing & Engagement
How much does ABCD consulting cost?
Pricing depends on the scope, duration and complexity of the engagement. Because every business is different, we provide a clear quote after the free discovery call and diagnostic. We are transparent about fees and there is no obligation until you decide to proceed.
Is the discovery call really free?
Yes. The discovery call is free and carries no obligation. It is a conversation where we listen to your goals and challenges and decide together whether ABCD is the right fit. You will not be pressured to commit.
Do you offer fixed-price engagements?
Where the scope is clear we can agree a fixed price for a defined phase of work. For broader programmes we may work on a monthly retainer or milestone basis. We will always agree the structure and fees before any work begins.
What is the ROI of working with ABCD?
The return on investment depends on your starting point, but our work typically pays for itself through margin improvement (pricing, cost structure, product mix), cash released (debtor days, stock), and losses prevented (controls). We agree the expected outcomes and KPIs at the start so you can measure the return.
Do you offer payment plans?
For longer engagements we can structure payments in stages tied to milestones. We will discuss and agree a payment schedule that works for your cash flow before the engagement begins.
What is included in an engagement?
A typical engagement includes the diagnostic, a prioritised action plan, implementation support alongside your team, coaching and knowledge transfer, dashboards and KPIs, and a handover that leaves the capability in your business. The exact scope is agreed with you before we start.
Consulting Process
What is your consulting process?
Five steps: a free discovery call, a diagnostic and assessment, a prioritised action plan, implementation support, and handover with sustainment. We listen first, diagnose the real constraints, build a practical plan, work alongside your team, and leave the capability behind.
How long does a consulting engagement take?
A focused engagement on one service area may take 2–3 months. A broader performance improvement programme typically runs 3–6 months. Quick wins are delivered early so you see benefit before the engagement ends.
Do you work on-site or remotely?
Both. We are Cape Town-based and work on-site where it adds value (workshops, process mapping, team coaching) and remotely for analysis, reviews and coaching. Most engagements are a blend of both.
How involved do we need to be?
Your involvement is essential. The best results come when the owner and key managers are engaged in the diagnostic, the plan and the implementation. We coach your team so they own the change — that is what makes the improvements last.
What happens after the engagement ends?
We hand over the dashboards, controls, processes and habits so your team can sustain and build on the work. The capability stays in your business. We are available for follow-up support if needed, but the goal is your independence, not dependence on us.
Do you provide ongoing support?
Yes. Many clients engage us for periodic reviews, coaching or specific projects after the initial engagement. The relationship is ongoing, but the goal is always to leave your team capable of running the business without us.
Expected Outcomes
What outcomes can I expect from working with ABCD?
Improved gross and net margins, stronger and more predictable cash flow, reduced operational risk through proportionate controls, a business that can grow beyond the founder, reliable and repeatable operations, and the dashboards and habits that keep performance on track. We agree specific outcomes and KPIs with you at the start.
How quickly will I see results?
Quick wins — often from pricing corrections and obvious cost or cash leaks — can show up within the first month. Structural improvement in margins, controls and processes builds over a few quarters as your team adopts the new habits and reporting rhythm.
Can you guarantee results?
We guarantee a rigorous process, a clear plan and committed support, but business results depend on implementation, which depends on your team. We mitigate this by coaching your people, agreeing KPIs at the start, and building the habits that make success measurable and sustainable.
How do you measure success?
We agree a small set of KPIs with you at the start of the engagement — typically financial (margin, cash flow), operational (on-time delivery, quality) and growth (pipeline, retention) — and review them on a fixed rhythm so progress is visible and adjustments happen early.
Will the improvements last after you leave?
Yes. That is the point of the handover step. We build the dashboards, controls, processes and review rhythms into your team's routine so improvement becomes their job, not ours. Knowledge transfer is built into every engagement.
Remote & Location
Do you offer remote consulting?
Yes. We work with SMEs across South Africa remotely for analysis, reviews and coaching, and on-site where it adds value. Most engagements are a blend. Remote does not mean distant — we maintain a regular review rhythm and direct access throughout.
Where is ABCD based?
We are based in Table View, Cape Town, South Africa. Our registered address is 41 Porterfield Road, Table View, Cape Town, Western Cape, 7441.
Do you travel to clients?
Yes. For engagements in Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria and elsewhere we travel for workshops, process mapping and team sessions, and work remotely between visits. Travel costs are agreed upfront.
Can you work with businesses outside South Africa?
Our primary focus is South African SMEs. We may consider engagements in neighbouring SADC markets where the fit is right. Contact us to discuss.
Getting Started
How do I get started with ABCD?
Book a free discovery call. We will listen to your goals and challenges, answer your questions, and decide together whether ABCD is the right fit. There is no obligation. You can book online or contact us by phone or email.
What is the free business control audit?
It is a free, instant online assessment that scores your business across profitability, controls, processes, KPIs and leadership, and highlights your biggest gaps. It takes a few minutes and gives you a personalised report. There is no obligation.
What should I prepare for the discovery call?
